OPINION — The Oct. 21 edition of the Sun City Independent reported that the Recreation Centers of Sun City Budget, Finance and Audit Committee recommending a $90 increase in annual assessments and a $110 increase in privilege card fees, and I just read on the RCSC website the proposed increase has been lowered to $60.
The $90 assessment increase represented approximately 13% over last year's rate; $60 is still double the annual inflation rate of 3.7%. What justifies the extra amount?
Certainly, inflation affects RCSC. But it also affects the residents who pay its bills. Many of us live on fixed incomes while struggling with rising costs for groceries, gasoline, utilities, insurance and other necessities. We cannot simply increase our incomes by over 7% to cover our expenses.
What is particularly troubling is that no explanation was provided in the newspaper report to justify an increase of this magnitude. Before asking residents to shoulder such a substantial burden, RCSC should provide a detailed accounting of why the increase is necessary and what alternatives have been considered.
Fiscal responsibility isn't simply finding ways to raise more revenue. It also means making difficult choices, establishing priorities, postponing less essential expenditures and finding creative ways to operate within available resources.
Sun City residents are tightening their belts. We should expect no less from the organization that serves them.
A large increase demands more than a recommendation. It demands a compelling justification.
